What I\u2019ve Learned the Hard Way"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As someone who\u2019s lived and breathed endurance training for years, I\u2019ve always believed I was doing the best thing possible for my heart. I mean, how could something that makes you stronger, leaner, and more resilient possibly be bad for you?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the more I\u2019ve read\u2014and frankly, the more I\u2019ve felt in my own body\u2014the more I\u2019ve started to ask tougher questions about the long-term effects of intense endurance training on heart health. Especially as I get older, the conversation has shifted from \u201cHow fast can I go?\u201d to \u201cHow long can I do this safely?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-the-thing-you-love-might-hurt-you-nbsp\">When the Thing You Love Might Hurt You&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We know the science: regular exercise is good for your heart. It lowers blood pressure, reduces inflammation, improves circulation. All true. But like anything else, there can be too much of a good thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research now shows that chronic, high-volume endurance training\u2014especially over many years\u2014can lead to structural changes in the heart. Atrial enlargement. Myocardial fibrosis. Irregular rhythms like Afib. Things we don\u2019t talk about much at the starting line, but things that are very real, particularly for those of us who&#8217;ve been at this for decades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-moment-it-hit-me-dave-scott-nbsp\">The Moment It Hit Me: Dave Scott&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What really hit me, though, was finding out that Dave Scott\u2014yes, <em>the<\/em> Dave Scott, six-time Ironman World Champion\u2014had to undergo open-heart surgery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me say that again: Dave Scott. The guy who defined what it means to be an endurance machine. He had two aneurysms and two valves repaired in 2024 due to years of intense training.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I remember reading that and just sitting with it for a while. If <em>he<\/em> wasn\u2019t immune\u2026 none of us are.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave was honest about how years of extreme training likely contributed to his condition. That took guts. And it made me reflect hard on my own journey\u2014how I\u2019ve pushed, how I\u2019ve ignored warning signs, how I\u2019ve worn the pain and fatigue like badges of honor. But what\u2019s the cost?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learning-to-listen-nbsp\">Learning to Listen&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not going to stop training\u2014this lifestyle is in my blood. But I\u2019ve shifted how I think about it. I\u2019ve started paying more attention to how I feel day to day, not just how fast I\u2019m recovering or how many watts I\u2019m pushing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve spoken with cardiologists. I\u2019ve done deeper cardiac screenings. I\u2019ve built in more rest. I\u2019ve started treating my heart like the vital organ it is\u2014not just the engine that drives me forward.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rethinking-more-is-better-nbsp\">Rethinking \u201cMore Is Better\u201d&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What really changed my approach was learning that heart health and endurance training follow a <em>J-shaped curve<\/em>. That means moderate exercise lowers cardiovascular risk\u2014but too little or <em>too much<\/em> can both be problematic. Large studies, including the Copenhagen City Heart Study and research from the Mayo Clinic, suggest that consistently pushing high volumes of intense training\u2014especially over many years\u2014can increase risks like atrial fibrillation, myocardial fibrosis, and even coronary artery calcification. It was eye-opening to realize that the \u201cgrind every day\u201d mentality might actually be working against longevity. The sweet spot? It turns out 150\u2013300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, blended with some higher-intensity efforts and strength training, gives you all the cardiovascular benefits without the long-term risks. Now, I train smarter\u2014not just harder\u2014with my future health in mind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-this-means-going-forward-nbsp\">What This Means Going Forward&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies show endurance athletes have a higher prevalence of arrhythmias than the general population. We\u2019re not talking couch potatoes here\u2014we\u2019re talking fit, lean, high-performing people. But the heart is a muscle, and like any muscle, it can be overworked. Scar tissue. Electrical disruptions. Silent risks we might not catch until it\u2019s too late.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why I make a point to get regularly screened for cardiovascular biomarkers\u2014not just the basics, but the ones that really tell the story. That includes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ApoB<\/strong> \u2013 the gold-standard marker for atherogenic particle load, far more predictive of risk than LDL alone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Homocysteine<\/strong> \u2013 elevated levels can impair endothelial function and contribute to plaque formation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein)<\/strong> \u2013 a key indicator of low-grade systemic inflammation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NT-proBNP<\/strong> \u2013 reflects cardiac strain, even in the absence of symptoms.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Troponin I (high-sensitivity)<\/strong> \u2013 a marker of subclinical cardiac injury.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lipoprotein(a)<\/strong> \u2013 a genetically influenced risk factor that&#8217;s often missed in standard panels.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Oxidized LDL<\/strong> \u2013 indicates how likely your LDL is to trigger inflammation in the arteries.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Arterial stiffness<\/strong> \u2013 a key indicator of vascular aging and elasticity, which can predict future cardiovascular events.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SEVR (Subendocardial Viability Ratio)<\/strong> \u2013 measures how efficiently your heart muscle is perfused under stress, offering insight into oxygen supply vs. demand.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CONNEQT Pulse<\/strong> \u2013 the tool I use daily to monitor arterial stiffness and SEVR; it\u2019s become an essential part of my longevity toolkit.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cardiac stress testing with echocardiography<\/strong> \u2013 helps assess how well your heart performs under load and can detect silent ischemia or abnormal heart rhythms.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) scoring<\/strong> \u2013 a powerful, non-invasive scan that quantifies calcified plaque buildup and long-term cardiovascular risk.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these metrics I monitor <strong>daily<\/strong>, like arterial stiffness and SEVR with the CONNEQT Pulse. It\u2019s about staying in the game longer. It\u2019s about doing what we love without breaking ourselves in the process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I still believe in the power of endurance sports. It\u2019s given me more than I could ever put into words.
